Mayors ask the attorney general to intervene in the case involving Luisa

The National Association of Mayors of the Socialist Party (ANA-PS) requests the urgent intervention of the Attorney General of the Republic to “restore the truth” against “a gross judicial error”, in the context of the case involving Luísa Salgueiro, mayor of Matosinhos that was constituted defendant.

At issue is the constitution of Luísa Salgueiro as a defendant after the Public Ministry considered that the mayor of Matosinhos, who is currently president of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, improperly appointed her chief of staff, since she did not resort to a procedure of public tender.

The mayors of the PS consider that this is “a gross judicial error, since the appointment of the heads of cabinet must be carried out under the terms of the law which, as stated in art. 43, of Law 75/2013.

Defines that the members of the support offices for the presidency and the council are appointed and dismissed by the mayor, under the proposal of the in the case of the support office for the council, and the exercise of their functions also ceases with the cessation of the term of office of the mayor.

“This was the legal framework based on the appointment not only of Luísa Salgueiro’s chief of staff, but also of all the chiefs of staff of the mayors who subscribed to this position”, underlines ANA-PS.

For this reason, “and with the aim of restoring the truth and good name of those involved”, they request “the urgent intervention of the Attorney General of the Republic, in order to quickly remedy this clamorous error, which undermines the credibility of justice , calls into question democracy and the image of local power in Portugal”.
